Bombs and Blood Open City Tour

Relive a bloody chapter of World War II as you unravel a very different aspect of Rome. During the war, the city was declared an ‘open city’ after Mussolini was arrested. This meant that the city had surrendered without putting up a fight. However, German soldiers marched in and occupied the city and the Allied Forces rained down bombs on it. On this tour, you will stop by the district of San Lorenzo that was bombed heavily. You will also drop by Porta Ostiense, where over 3,000 Italian soldiers went to war with German troops trying to sneak in. Next, you will visit the Ardeatine Caves that witnessed the gruesome massacre of over 300 men. During the tour, you will also visit the Museum of Liberation that once served as the Gestapo Prisons before you make your way past the Via Veneto, a street where the German Command was located. In the end, you will also catch glimpses of Mussolini’s and King Victor’s residence.
